Statement on Appointment as Shadow Minister for the Environment and Water

03 June 2019

I am honoured to have been appointed as the Shadow Minister for the Environment and Water in Anthony Albanese’s Labor shadow cabinet.

I look forward to working with Mr Albanese and my colleagues to demonstrate Labor’s capacity as the alternate government. I thank them for the trust they have placed in me in this role.

I pay tribute to Tony Burke, who made a substantial and lasting contribution as Labor’s Environment and Water Shadow Minister. Labor’s policy under Mr Burke’s stewardship proposed a significant modernisation of Australia’s environmental laws, supported the creation of a Commonwealth environmental protection agency and placed science at the forefront of environment and water decision-making.

All of these steps are vital in order to protect our native species, respond to the extinction crisis, protect our beaches and coastlines, clean up the nation’s rivers, and protect the Great Barrier Reef.

I look forward to holding the Liberal-National coalition to account on their government’s record of failures to protect the environment, and to properly manage our water and water buybacks.
