Hi delegates. I'm coming to you from Jagera land. It's my absolute honour to second Chapter Three of the platform today thank you so much to everyone who has contributed to this chapter: delegates from around the country, affiliates, and LEAN, and so many more. And a special shout out to the Shadow Assistant Minister for the Environment Josh Wilson. 

The previous speaker, a good friend of mine, mentioned in his contribution that it was World Poetry Day at the weekend, so I thought I might open by citing a few lines from a very famous poem that I suspect has been brought to the minds of many women across Australia over the past few weeks, and that's Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market. It's a very long poem. I'm not going to read the entire poem, but it's a poem that has themes about women and about the importance of sisterhood between women.

It's good to follow the member for Brisbane, because I know he has, in his electorate, some real concerns being raised with him about aircraft noise as is the case in my electorate. I just want to put on the record that I have met with the Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance. Representatives of that alliance have been to see me about their campaign in respect of aircraft noise. 

Quarantine is a federal responsibility but, as with so many matters, the Prime Minister is shirking his responsibility. He doesn't hold a hose, mate! And, when it comes to keeping Australians safe, he simply leaves it to others. 

It's a pleasure to follow the member for Monash. I was listening with great interest when he said that he had been living in the real world and then went on to describe a world in which employers are always magnanimous and reasonable; employees and other workers who are in insecure forms of work are there by choice because it's more suitable for them; and all employment relationships are based on trust, mutual caring and responsible approaches to building their business. I've got to say to the member that that sounds a lot more like la la land than the real world. And I must also say that of course there are wonderful employers and of course there are people who are in insecure forms of work because that does suit them, but that's far from a universal experience.

On Australia Day, I announced the recipients of this year's Griffith Australia Day Awards. This is a tradition which was started by my predecessor as the member for Griffith, former Prime Minister Hon. Kevin Rudd, AC.

Friday was the anniversary of the horrific murders of Hannah Clarke and her three children in my electorate. Hannah's parents, Lloyd and Sue, and her family and friends have shown great strength throughout the year that followed the murders, and I pay tribute to them. One of their first acts was to establish Small Steps 4 Hannah to help others. 

'Australia's natural environment and iconic places are in an overall state of decline and are under increasing threat. The environment is not sufficiently resilient to withstand current, emerging or future threats, including climate change. The environmental trajectory is currently unsustainable.' Those are the words that start off the 'Key messages' section in the final report of the independent review of Australia's environmental laws. This is a report that was provided to the government in October—the government sat on it until January before releasing it—and it comes at a time of very significant environmental degradation, as the reviewer has said.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we’re meeting, and I pay my respects to elders past and present. We are standing on land for which sovereignty was never ceded.

All Stolen Generations and their families, including anyone connected with the former Cranbrook House, a little to the west of here. I know that today we’re all thinking of the girls and young women who were taken there against their and their family’s will.
