Ellie Bassingthwaighte, Caxton Legal Centre, 2022 recipient

“Ellie has been a volunteer of ours since early 2015. She attends fortnightly to provide legal services to vulnerable and disadvantaged clients as part of our afterhours clinic. The clinic Ellie volunteers in serves constituents of the Griffith electorate as well as individuals state-wide who are experiencing employment related legal issues such as unfair dismissal, workplace discrimination, and sexual harassment. Ellie is an exceptionally reliable and committed volunteer, and highly effective legal adviser to our clients. Many lawyers, especially those early in their careers, have done their time as volunteers at Caxton, but very few have maintained Ellie’s level of commitment for as long as she has. We are also aware that Ellie regularly volunteers at another local community legal service, LGBTI Legal Service, located on Hockings Street in West End. This is in addition to her contribution to the legal profession more broadly as a member of the Queensland Law Society’s Industrial Law Committee. We believe Ellie's demonstrated commitment to her community as a volunteer lawyer make her an excellent nominee for the Griffith Australia Day Awards.”
